On April 16th, members and friends gathered for a Congregational meeting to discuss the topic of a Youth Pastor position. Estimated costs for different candidates (part-time, full-time, college grad, seminary grad) were presented along with an update on our Church's current financial position. Ample time was given for the attendees to express their opinions on the matter.
The two main thoughts expressed were "The youth will be impacted if we wait so let's form a search committee now" and "Let's wait until we pay back the existing $54,000 that was borrowed from the Building Fund."
In the end, a majority of the 29 members present voted to
authorize the formation of a Youth Pastor Search Committee at this time. Work has already started to form this Committee and the goal is to have it functioning by mid-May.
I read that night at the close of the meeting from James 2. It is clear from this passage that faith and works go together in the life a believer. My encouragement to the Congregation is to "work" in this matter in three ways:
1) Pray for the Search Committee as they carry out their assigned task.
2) Since no Pastor can do the work alone, get involved. Ask how you can actually and physically help the Youth Ministry program.
3) Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart to determine how much you should give to the ministry of this Church.
2 Corinthians 9:7 shows us that giving is a planned and purposeful act of worship ("Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.").
When a candidate has been selected, another Congregational meeting will be held to vote to add to our staff or not.
