What are we about?
Here, at Moose Lake Covenant Church, we have so many ministries and activities going all the time that it can feel like we are busy spinning our wheels. Rather then spinning our wheels, we do know what we are about, there are just many avenues of reaching Christ-likeness.
Our purpose is to make disciples of all nations and peoples, teaching them to obey everything Jesus said. (Matthew 28:19,20) What is a disciple and what does he/she look like?
A disciple is a person who, in following Jesus, loves God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength and loves one another. We believe this is possible only as we purposefully stay near Jesus.
We teach and practice what has been called the Six Marks of Discipleship. These marks are disciplines we practice, which places us in front of Jesus on a daily basis. The Six Marks of Discipleship are:
1. A disciple prays daily. We take time each day, maybe multiple times, to talk with God the Father and to listen to Him. It is vital in our relationship with God.
2. A disciple reads the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word, spoken and written to us. All that He wants us to know or understand is in there. It is a letter about His love and patience for us.
3. A disciple worships weekly. Worship is about approaching God with other believers to celebrate all that God has and is doing. Worship is the place where our world is right-sided up as we are formed by God’s Word to us.
4. A disciple serves in and outside the Church. Jesus said He came to serve and not be served. Thus it is so for all who follow Jesus. We find joy, peace, fulfillment and satisfaction when we serve others.
5. A disciple gives of one’s time, talent and treasure. A person who follows Jesus is a giving person. Financial resources usually receive the most attention, but just as important, maybe even more so, is one’s time. Today people spell love—T-I-M-E.
6. A disciple develops spiritual relationships. There is no such thing as an independent disciple. God has designed people to be interdependent, where they rely on each other. In our following of Jesus, we need the help of other Believers to encourage and strengthen, pray and support our walk with Jesus.
If you want to learn more about the 6 Marks of discipleship, read Michael W. Foss’ book “Real Faith for Real Life”, published by Augsburg Book.
Making disciples is what we have been called to do by Jesus and that is our purpose here. The staff, the ministries, the activities are all about encouraging each other and those not yet following Jesus to become His disciples. Come and join in this faith journey.
